Establishing a Cue Sound

First, you need a way to “talk” with your baby about his or her elimination. So we “cue” – make a sound or word or noise that is the same every time. Whenever you see or hear your baby eliminate – make the sound! A common one is “pssssssss” (logical, wouldn’t you say?)  Don’t worry about where the pee is ending up, just cue! Baby could be wearing a diaper, or on the changing table, or in the bath – it doesn’t matter. There is no right or wrong. Just cue when you know Baby’s eliminating!

After a week or so (I was nervous, so I think I did two weeks) Baby will associate the feeling of eliminating with the sound you’re making….so… then… after a nap, or when you think your baby might need to relieve themselves, hold him over the potty, or a diaper, whatever makes you comfortable – and make the cue sound!……You will most likely have set up the communication well enough that your baby will pee! Seemingly “on command”  – but that’s not it. What’s happened is that you have made a connection, established a language of sorts, to let your baby know you are aware of him and his body and what he needs.

When the cue sound is established, you can cue your baby to eliminate in appropriate places and over appropriate receptacles (note: I did not say just the toilet! Babies get away with anything – you can let baby use the toilet, the sink, the little potty seats, the toilet inserts, the bathtub, the shower, a 5 gallon pail, an old tupperware container, outside, the possibilities are endless!!) whenever you want!

This does NOT mean that it will always “work” and there will be many many many times that you won’t “catch” it – but the key is to be aware. Don’t push yourself for more than you can humanly get, and don’t punish yourself or your baby when you have “misses” – that’s just normal! And use diapers! They will make misses less traumatic at first.

As you and Baby get more in tune with each other and make the effort to communicate – you’ll find you don’t actually need as many diapers. And that baby can go diaper-free without worry! (Bare baby bums are just too cute!)

  3. Greetings! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to correct this issue. If you have any recommendations, please share. With thanks!
